Watching Bubba Watson win the Masters with his homemade swing and distaste for teachers, simulators and swing monitors was an uplifting experience for Joel Durrance.

“I really think a lot of guys are going to realize that their swings are individual and best for them,” said Durrance, an Ocala native who has run roughshod through his draw of the Jacksonville Area Golf Association Match Play Championship, at the Eagle Landing Golf Club. “Bubba proved that. It’s the way I want to play golf and the way I’m comfortable. A lot more guys might starting feeling the same way.”

Durrance, who played college golf at Flagler and is honing his game on the amateur level this summer in preparation for a possible run through the PGA Tour qualifying process, won two matches Saturday to advance to the semifinals.

Durrance defeated Evan Berlin 4 and 3 and Mike Vallencourt 3 and 2, and will face John Lobb at 9 this morning in one semifinal match.

Lobb beat Ken Moody 5 and 4, then outlasted Jacksonville University player Jamey Salmon in 19 holes in the afternoon.

Defending champion Eric Graybeal and Tom Gross will meet in the other semifinal. Graybeal edged Ted Smith 1-up and Jarred Garcia 2 and 1; while Gross defeated Paul Demyanovich 2-up and Matthew Salane 2 and 1.

The championship match will be 2 p.m.

The only drawback for Durrance so far this week is that he has no idea how the 17th and 18th holes are playing. He won his opening-round match 5 and 4 over C.W. Taylor and has reached the semifinals playing only 45 holes, while Lobb has played 47, Graybeal 52 and Gross 53.

Durrance is the only one of the four semifinalists who hasn’t yet had a match reach the 18th hole.

Durrance also is on a bit of a roll. He’s already won two amateur events in Ocala and plans to play U.S. Amateur and U.S. Public Links qualifiers this month. He said he’s re-dedicated himself to golf after admitting he may have coasted at times at Flagler.

“I didn’t have the best work ethic,” he said. “But I’ve been playing a lot back in Ocala and I realize I have a lot of work to do if I want to do anything at the professional level.”

Durrance is part of a growing cadre of young guns from Ocala that include mini-tour player Tyler Hawk and PGA Tour member Ted Potter Junior.

“We’ve got a lot of good players down there,” he said.

And Durrance is determined to prove that his approach — playing golf rather than empyting one bucket after another on the range and stressing over multiple swing thoughts — is the best approach.

“It works for me,” he said. “I’m not one to hit balls for hours on the range. I’d rather play for hours. You get different looks and different lies on the course. I don’t want 17 things in my head when I’m over the ball. I think keeping things simple is the best and Bubba Watson is proving
that it works every time he plays golf.”
